My Christmas Story

The Green Chair: My Christmas Story

The green chair sits in a far corner of our portable classroom. We are isolated from the rest of the middle school because life for these students is overwhelming. Teachers and assistants are challenged with "behavior issues", and when students feel out of control are encouraged to sit in the green chair. Educational experts define it as a "decompression zone". We are an island of misfit toys.

This September, I took a 3 day  assignment to substitute that has lasted over 3 months. Progress is slow. Improvement difficult to measure. All of the staff care deeply and I began to see students through eyes of Jesus. They became modern day equivalents of Peter, James, and John.

Imagine my surprise on a recent Friday I noticed the green chair had remained vacant the entire day! Monday was much the same.  WOW! Breakthrough! Time to rejoice!  School administration gave us permission and even promised to pay for a Pizza party. (The modern day version of killing the fatted calf)

Then the very next day, we crashed. Total blowout. Failure, regression, set back, discouragement, and extreme disappointment. Sadly I began to make plans to cancel the party. The Green Chair was once again occupied on a regular basis.

That night the Lord gently whispered to me:

Lord: Why cancel a celebration because of failure?
I argued: We are trying to teach  the importance of consequences for bad behavior.
Lord: Since when did you deserve  consequences for bad behavior?  Do you remember the Father running to embrace the prodigal son? No consequences for bad behavior there.

We celebrate Christmas  as Joy coming to the world.  The cross became the answer for our collective bad behavior. All bad behavior....past, present, and future. Truth be told, we all need green chair time. Time to reset and to remember.

So next Tuesday we are having a massive pizza celebration. Not because kids managed to stay out of the green chair. But because we celebrate their originality, creativity, and brilliance. After all, God loves all of us misfit toys.

September Worship at the River

"If we relegate worship to meetings...it then becomes situational. Worship is relational, therefore we do it in life!"

After a summer of family connections and informal outdoor gatherings, we are looking forward to our "relational life worship" time together this Sunday, October 9 at 6pm at Phonics Phactory 3333 NE Eighth St. Gresham (no potluck this month). Sunday October 14 we will resume our 4pm potluck and worship gatherings at the Troutdale House for the remainder of the year.

This season, for Carlene and I, has been challenging and filled with opportunities to live in joyful worship (YEA!!).  We have been faced with learning new skills regarding the management of family estate properties.  She is doing great but we both have needed the wisdom of Solomon in our "training for reigning". Thank you for praying with us.

Monday, August 06, 2012

Pay close attention to this Pacificministries Update please.  There will be a test.

Last WAR in July we met with several other Fellowships at Sunset Park to introduce ourselves, feast upon great barbecued food, and to enjoy the lovely summer weather.  I felt the presence of Jesus because we gathered in His name and I went away strengthened and encouraged in His love after hearing about healing, provision, comfort, deliverance and peace you found in following the Holy Spirit.  And yes the intense sunlight was in our eyes toward the end of the evening but I could see "the Son" reflected in your eyes as you shared your appreciation for God's love and the difference Jesus has made in your lives. It was a delight to meet you all.

This August WAR will be hosted by Wayne and Eliza Miller because The Troutdale House, our normal location for WAR,  is hosting a wedding that day. This is a blessing for Laura and Martin Burlus, owners of The Troutdale House, to have a wedding booked and we've decided to gather at the kid-friendly lovely home of the Millers in Corbett.

Please note a few changes.  We will be meeting at 5pm instead of 4pm Bring snack foods instead of potluck foods.  Miller's address is 37501 E Knieriem Corbett,  OR 97019
Phone/cell # (503) 695-5913

It's quiz time!
1) Where are we meeting for WAR on August 12th? HERE
2) What time are we meeting?
3) True or False? Bring snack foods only.
4) Who are the owners of The Troutdale House?
5) What got in your eyes last meeting at Sunset Park?
6) Will Darrell and Carlene be in Forest Lake, MN celebrating his uncle and aunt's 50th wedding anniversary?
7) As ring-bearer for his uncle and aunt's wedding what did Darrell do during the ceremony??

Carlene Foot?

After 12 weeks in a temporary foot cast Carlene discovered from MRI results that we have to face some kind of surgery to repair tendon in her right foot.... or a cast now to see if total Immobility will help, or… total healing. Will you agree with us for the latter....we like that option best.

Personal Reflections over the Past Month

Before I left for Korea and Mongolia, friends and passionate followers of Jesus celebrated Delight Petersen's celebration of life.  We returned to East Hill to worship with friends and honor Jesus.  It was wonderful to meet and greet friends I have not seen in over 10 years.  It was an overwhelmingly positive experience, and Carlene and I were grateful both for the years we served there, friends we made, and the journey we are on now!

I want to thank you for praying and supporting my trip, especially as I had to endure three wonderful visits to my Korean dentist for my temporary crown.  I guess we all are contending for temporary crowns this side of eternity!  Our Passover Seder dinner was outstanding in every way... both with the way our team worked together and we made it entirely a worship experience.  Carlene served as the hostess with the mostess.... while maintaining our household including two trips to Port Townsend to tend to her mother now in assisted living.

Although I have been to Mongolia several times before, this trip was definitive, confirming and different in many ways from other assignments.  Joining forces with our Canadian prophetic team was God ordained and very productive.  I have mentioned several times I learned more about kingdom and apostolic and prophetic fathering this trip than ever before.  A summary:

  • A very distinct change from speaking to large groups and giving information to listening, asking questions, and asking the Lord what is the breakthrough song... and then singing it!
  • Rather than giving answers to questions, the Lord began to reveal to us deeper issues at the root of both personal and corporate challenges.
  • Purposely, we kept the schedule open enough to allow the Holy Spirit to fill it.
  • There are some 6000 North Koreans working in dangerous, difficult, and dirty jobs in Mongolia.  North Korea has an embassy in the capital city of Mongolia, and I sensed God is going to open up avenues of Ministry yet to be revealed with North Koreans in Mongolia.
  • Mongolia is like the American Wild West.  Many countries are coming to take advantage of the rich deposits of high-grade coal and gold within the land.  Kingdom leadership must take the initiative to understand how to protect and yet profit from these untapped resources.
  • While in Korea and Mongolia, I began to sense a shift in leadership from building churches to building people.  Koreans are beginning to understand it is not how many people come to your church or how many books you publish or how many years of seminary or degrees you accumulate... but it is your obedience and heart for the way the Holy Spirit wants to build His Kingdom.  I met many young men and women who are willing and have taken radical steps in this direction... really encouraging!
  • Businesses, politics, education, architecture and construction, arts and entertainment, and churches are beginning to understand they all play a vital role in Mongolian Kingdom culture and practice.
  • Young Mongolian believers have a passion to take the gospel back to Jerusalem through Muslim and Islamic countries and spiritual strongholds.  We believe the Lord will use them in a mighty way in these last days.  The most important thing we can give to them is not our books, information, and teaching.  It is our friendship, our listening ear, our fathering and mothering them, and our encouraging them is what is important.

We both fly to Los Angeles later this month to attend a 90th birthday party for our mentor and friend Jean Darnall.  I will speak at a Korean gathering of intercessors who are contending for North Korea.

I'll also join our Cascadia team from Canada, Washington, and Oregon in Spokane on May 9 and 10th.

Bless you,

Darrell

Final Update from Mongolia, Friday Passover Celebration, No Worship at the River This Sunday, April 8

Many thanks for your prayers for Mongolia and Korea these past weeks.  Every day was filled with God arranged appointments and surprises.  We met with business and government leaders, missionaries, teachers, and pastors with a vision to see Mongolia Rise and Shine.  And they are!  I sang a prophetic song in nearly every meeting:

Spring Time's Coming, Winter's over, the Seed Begins to Grow.
The Seed Is a Song in You, so Mongolia, Sing Your Song.

It was a very big encouragement for you visited our church and taught us God's Word.

Thank you for coming to encourage us that we are a song!

When you visited us two years ago, you encouraged us with a word from the Lord... and now it is bearing fruit.  Thank You!

Mongolian Update

One day a man received, as a gift, a single seed. He treasured this gift for within this seed contained the DNA of promise and potential. He loved his seed. He showed it to all his friends and family and all were amazed. He love his seed so much he commissioned a beautiful crystal case on which was beautifully engraved the date he received it. The case took prominence on his fireplace mantle, and was proudly shown to all who came. Weeks, months, and finally a year passed and the seed and it's beautiful case collected dust. Sometimes the man actually walked into his beautiful room and forgot the seed was even there. But he loved books on seeds and they soon competed with the seed itself for prominence on the fireplace mantle. In fact, he became somewhat of an expert on the origin and variety of seeds.

Year after year passed and as the man grew older he sometimes held the beautiful case and gazed at the seed with longing and even a bit of sadness for he knew yet still, it was filled with promise. Maybe...some day.

John 12:24 NIV Very truly I tell you, unless a seed of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.

Mongolians are planting their seeds!

Dental Adventure

It began as a slow consistent pulsating ache in my lower tooth. First, I just ignored it hoping it was just a temporary problem. I had just finished my ninth day of teaching and ministry in many different venues in this wonderful nation of Korea. But now, I prayed prayers of desperation myself: Lord I do not need a major tooth problem in another country.

Slowly, the pain diminished but then a day later came back with a vengeance! Drugs did not help. Prayer did not seem to be going anywhere either. I was praying for a group of people at the end of meeting and a woman presented herself from Iran and she was a dentist. The next day my friend Pastor David Park took me on a subway to a crowded Korean dental clinic. I knew this was a different dental clinic as there was a cross on the door and a small church connected to the dental offices. These dental servants were a blessing as it turned out I had a major infection underneath a crown and had to have a root canal and a temporary crown. By the way, they don't seem to use a lot of anesthetic in Korea the people just endure it.... yikes!

Bottom line I went from the dentist's chair straight across the hall to the church offices and ministered to about 25 people hungry for Jesus. What a surprise.

Today I leave for Mongolia a very happy and blessed and pain-free servant.

Thank you for praying for grace safety and no more dental problems.

Korea/Mongolia 1

Many thanks for your prayers and support as I have been in Korea for six days. I have shared in pastors and leadership seminars, intercessory groups, house churches and young people's gatherings. The church in Korea, like America, is standing at crossroads. There is a growing and holy dissatisfaction for maintaining status quo. Young people, seminary graduates and even young pastors are beginning to ask the question: There must be something more than building buildings and collecting people. Many are willing to make massive changes in their view of the church education and missions.

Everywhere I go I am challenging them with a question my friend Rodrick from India asked a group of young leaders: The fruit of a mango it's not another mango. The fruit of a mango is a tree.

I am sensing a massive mango tree planter movement!

Many Koreans are passionate to receive prayer for fresh anointing. My reply is: I can give you no more anointing than you already have.

I leave in a few days for Mongolia where I will join with Canadian leaders for ministry.

Delight's Celebration and Pacificministries Korea Mongolia March UPDATE

Carlene:

Before Darrell leaves this Monday for Korea and Mongolia we have a weekend filled with activities to be together with you. Our hearts will be filled with joy celebrating together the life of our dear friend Delight Petersen who went to be with her Savior January 30, 2012.  Tears will flow as we let go of her earthly presence that touched our lives so much with wisdom and humor as she went about the Father's business caring for one another.  It's not an easy transition but God will give us the strength each step of the way.  Please pray for Bill and the immediate family as they prepare for this weekend of greeting many people who will be coming from near and far and please join us all at East Hill Church this Saturday at 10:30am.  May many who have not responded to His call say "yes" Saturday.

Since our set monthly time to gather for Worship at the River (WAR) falls on the day after Delight's celebration of life it seemed good to us to continue that celebration of life over to this Sunday March 11th at 4pm to share a meal together at the The Troutdale House in beautiful downtown Troutdale.  Many of Delight's family members will be attending Worship at the River so you will have opportunities to bless them in sharing your love for Delight and Bill if you were unable Saturday morning.  Worship will begin around 6pm to let the message of Christ dwell among us richly as we teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in our hearts.

Two reminders of up and coming events:

  • This Sunday at WAR we will take an offering for Pacificministries to send Darrell to Korea and Mongolia.  Bill Petersen writes:

"Monday Darrell is leaving for his 3rd trip to Mongolia. As you can imagine there will not be any offerings from the native peoples. This is a pure ‘giving” trip for Darrell as was the India trip. We need to cover remaining expenses from India as well as the expenses concerning Mongolia. Please consider what you could give towards covering these expenses.  So, let’s join Darrell in this trip by giving generously.  Make your checks out to PacificMinistries and put them in the basket by the front door this Sunday at WAR or fell free to usePAYPAL or major credit card for tax deductible contribution. Thanks for your help.  Bill Petersen

           Inline image 2Inline image 1
  • April 8th is Easter.  We are canceling WAR.  Instead we will celebrate a Passover Sader Dinner Friday night April 6, 2012 at The Troutdale House.  Again.  April WAR has been moved from Sunday the 8th to Friday the 6th so we can celebrate Passover together.  A donation of $10 is suggested and please reserve your place by replying to pacificministries@gmail.com.  Limited room.  More information to come.

Darrell:

We were incredibly blessed to host Rodrick Gilbert for several days in Port Townsend and in Portland. During informal meal time gatherings in homes and restaurants we were encouraged and challenged.  We gave Rodrick nearly $2400 for his ministry!  I will update ministry trip events but please pray for:

  1. Travel connections Seoul and Beijing and Mongolia
  2. Divine relational meetings filled with a spirit of wisdom and revelation
  3. Physical Health (I am still recovering from nasty cold/cough)
  4. Wisdom and protection for Carlene (she is still healing from a foot tendon issue)

Delight’s Celebration of Life Service

Delight’s Celebration of Life Service is
March 10, 2012 @ 10:30 am - 1:00 pm
EastHill Church Sanctuary
701 North Main Ave
Gresham, Or 97030

Food and Fellowship will follow - across the parking lot in the Youth Center

Last weekend we took the grandkids to the graveside and met up with about 40 relatives and friends from the Bend area.  It was a beautiful, sunny day.  It's hard to grieve about her body being in the ground, since she's really with Jesus right now.  But the tears did flow at the realization the only thing we were missing over the weekend was her.  She would have enjoyed being with the family and directing meals and grandkids.
Stories were shared and we realized, even more, that the youngest ones may have little to no memory of the grandma who always gave them snacks, signed and dated every book she gave them and loved to work in her garden.
So I am going to ask you to do something for us.  We are going to make a book for the grandkids – filled with stories from Delight’s friends.  The kids don't know the Delight who prayed with people, the Delight who welcomed people into her home (for a meal or for a few months) or the Delight who spoke words of encouragement, deliverance and direction into peoples lives.
Would you take a moment to tell us one of your favorite Delight stories?
You can email them back to Jennifer at djnkpete@gmail.com
Some of you have asked where to give in lieu of flowers.  There are two places close to Delight’s heart : International House of Prayer-NW and Glory of Zion. I have included a small blurb about both organizations with a link to their giving page.   Make sure you put "in memory of Delight Petersen".
The mission of International House of Prayer Northwest is to establish night and day intercessory worship for the return of Jesus in preparation of establishing His Kingdom on the earth. International House of Prayer Northwest will train and mobilize worshiping intercessors that operate in the forerunner spirit as end-time prophetic messengers.
Here is a direct link to IHOP-NW’s  giving page  Designate the funds “in memory of Delight Petersen”
We are called to help you achieve the fullness of your destiny in God. Our name signifies our call...
1.   To see the VISITATION of God in our city and nation. We are a church with a call to seek revival. We desire to see the GLORY of God manifested in our midst through signs & wonders, resulting in the fullness of harvest coming into the kingdom! (Psalm 85:6-13)
2. To see the Church RESTORED to its true foundation. The blossoming of the fig tree (Israel) through the restored Messianic movement signals a call to the church to return to its true roots and be re-established on its New Testament apostolic-prophetic foundation. (Eph. 2:20; 3:5-6)
Here is a direct link to GOZ’s giving page.  In additional comments, designate “in memory of Delight Petersen”
We will see you on March 10th  to Celebrate the gift of Delight's Life-

Dear Friends,
Just over a week ago we lost a great friend and lover of Jesus. Delight Petersen (with Bill and her grandchildren) is dancing with Jesus now. Just a few days before her homecoming we gathered musicians to worship in the living room of her home. There was an overwhelming sense of joy. With the same spirit of joy we'll celebrate Delight's life and rejoice in A Living Savior this Sunday, February 12 at 4 PM for our potluck and 6 PM for worship at theTroutdale House.
Just a few days ago Bill shared with the ALS support group his thoughts and feelings. What he wrote was profoundly moving and you can read it here.
We bless you,

Bill's Word to ALS Support Group

Hi. My name is Bill Petersen. My wife, Delight, was diagnosed with Medical ALS
(MALS) in January 2010. She died last Tuesday.

I am here today to thank all of you for the support, encouragement and
friendship. This group was an important part of our journey through MALS. You
might be asking yourself, “Why?”.

There is a collective strength in being part of a group who share a common
struggle. That collective strength flows down to you as an individual. When we
were tempted to think of our own struggle, we knew that there were others who
were walking the same path. That gave us strength to go on.

Important parts of that strength are those of you who are caregivers. With me is
a couple which has been strength to me and Delight during our journey. This
is Mike and Connie Dana. They were caregivers to Delight but more than that,
they loved her and have supported me in many ways over the past two years. I
encourage you, as I did last month, to identify caregivers in your circle of friends
and enlist their help early. I honor all of you who are caregivers.

For those of you who have been diagnosed with MALS, today I speak Comfort
to you because I have, and am, receiving comfort from those who surround me in
Love. I speak Hope to you - the Hope that will produce in you patient endurance
because of the journey that you are on. If you are new to the group, come back
to receive the hope, the comfort and the love that is here.

I also want to honor Lance, Sarah, Clare, Nancy, Betts and the entire team that
Dr. Goslin has assembled. They do not carry us as a burden on their shoulders
but rather they carry us in their hearts. Everyday they faced our challenges with
us. That is the strength of this MALS Support Group. I think we need to give them
a big handclap and cheer.

On the Oregon/SW Washington ALS Support Group website under the
heading “What is an ALS Support Group?” are 11 “IT IS” items.

On of the “IT IS” items states that a support group is “. . . guest speakers, current
research, diets, books, therapies and beliefs”

I’ve heard guest speakers here; I’ve read about current MALS research on
various websites; I’ve read books about MALS; heard about diets and therapies
but I’ve not heard much about beliefs.

So, I want to leave you with two things that I believe. My first belief about
MALS is that there is a cure for it. The cure for MALS is not in drugs nor is it
in the medical field. My wife was actually misdiagnosed. She was diagnosed
with MALS but she actually had ALS. In fact, she had ALS from her childhood

because at a very early age she had accepted Jesus Christ as A Loving Savior.

The cure for MALS is Jesus. JESUS IS ALS. He loved Delight so much that
when he came to heal her, she passed away peacefully into His arms. There was
no struggle.

He IS the only cure. That is my belief. I suspect that there are others in this group
who also believe and know that Jesus is ALS. If that is you, please stand. I honor
you for your stand.

Now, if you are not sure about this, I have a Rx for you. Take the Bible and read
the book of John for 15 minutes each day for one month. It will be good medicine
for your soul.

My second belief is that, Jesus the Loving Savior that cures MALS, is also A
LIVING SAVIOR. He is alive today. You can talk to Him and He will answer you.
Some people call that “prayer”. I just call that talking to God. And by the way, I
also believe that Jesus and God are one in the same.

I think C.S. Lewis said it best, “A man who was merely a man and said the sort of
things Jesus said wouldn’t be a great moral teacher; he’d either be a lunatic – on
a level with a man who says he’s a poached egg- or else he’d be the devil of hell.
You must make your choice. Either this man was and is the Son of God, or else
a madman or something worse. …But don’t let us come up with any patronizing
nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He hasn’t left that open to us.
He didn’t intend to.”

So, I will leave you with this …

John 10:3-4
3The watchman opens the door for this man, and the sheep listen to his
voice and heed it; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
4When he has brought his own sheep outside, he walks on before them,
and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. AMP

Remember, Jesus is A Loving Savior and A Living Savior. He is ALS.

God bless all of you. If you have any questions, I’d love to answer them.

Worship at the River January 2012
Psalm 123
1 I lift up my eyes to you,
to you who sit enthroned in heaven.
2 As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the LORD our God,
till he shows us his mercy.

Be Still

Oh Lord you are the refuge of my life shelter from storm, I will not fear, O Lord
when mountains fall into the sea and waters rage and foam in me, I will believe
You are exalted above the heaven ,strength and salvation in all the earth
You are exalted among the Nations, You are a River of gladness over all the earth,
Be still and know I am your God

JOY
I'm putting off my mourning clothes
Putting on my festal robes
I'll sing of all that You've done

You've taken all my shame
And you threw it all away
In the sea of forgetfulness

The weight of my sin
Is gone, gone, gone
I've been renewed in knowledge
After Your image
It is Your kind intention
To bless me with
Knowing the fullness of Your love

Bridge
With joy and gladness
We draw from an everflowing river
Of pleasure in Your presence
You fill us with the abundance of Your life
