Friends of Friends of Friends

I'm often asked what are the values or convictions which are a part of the company of friends we meet. I like one definition of the church the best: simply....friends of friends of friends.

Here is Gary Goodell's list of values...I like them...I identify with them, and thought I'd include it fo your reference.

Our Persuasions

1) We believe that the God of the Bible is wild and free, safe but not tame, unfathomable, uncontainable, and unpredictable, and yet able to be known intimately. 2) We believe that conversion is the consummate God-encounter, and that divine encounters and Holy Spirit sightings are an ongoing part of a person’s spiritual journey. 3) We believe in the full vesting and gifting of God’s people by the Holy Spirit, and that all the gifts of the Spirit are for today and are to be eagerly desired and used by faith. 4) We believe in the priesthood of all believers, and that every believer is called to do the work of the ministry as part of the body of Christ. 5) We believe “that permission has been granted to do church differently in the 21st Century,” and commit to helping believers to "be the church" wherever they go. 6) We believe that radical worship is a lifestyle, and is to be extravagant in its many expressions. 7) We believe that love, servanthood and generosity define all aspects of church life. 8) We believe the central theme of the New Testament, both taught and demonstrated by Jesus, is the message of the Kingdom of God. 9) We believe that the Regional Church is in fact a series or network of smaller Simple Churches that can gather within the given locale for worship and equipping.

Our Practices

1) The simpler the structure, the better.2) When we gather, it should be fun as much as it is important. 3) Our worship gatherings are for God, not for us, or the people we are trying to attract. 4) We endeavor to model a fail-safe environment that gives room for people to make mistakes as they grow in the things of the Spirit. And that the flow of the Spirit often is as messy and unpredictable as it is powerful. 5) We embrace children and youth as part of the believing community, and include them in our gatherings as fellow worshipers and ministers. 6) We believe that the Local Church does not “do” small groups, but that the Local Church “is” a small group where everyone participates.7) We are called to discern the times and seasons, and catch how to minister "in the moment." 8) We understand the "changing of the guard" in this current move of the Spirit, and that true apostolic fathers and mothers are noted by their cry that their sons and daughters will overtake them.9) We recognize that the more we pursue God as a prophetic people; the less our lives will be explainable.

Our hearts ache for your moving.

Oh, come and speak Your Word.

Breathe the breath of life into our souls.

We hunger for you, Lord.

A yearning, as deep calls to deep.

Observations of what the Lord has begun in our lives:

a) New newsletter, reviewing in writing, our meetings and God’s movement in our midst.

b) Prayer Centers – A passion for prayer is the primary motive; it teaches how to rest in Christ.

c) God is speeding up transitions and opening up new opportunities and relationships;

similar to Joshua, when he led God’s people into the promised land.

d) We will experience more battles as we reach out in intercessory prayer; usually, we

experience worship first.

e) We need to tune in to the Lord and what He is doing, like the right channel that water flows

through.

f) We will be dealing with those who are not the sheep of the Good Shepherd, similar to

Haman in the life of Esther. They may be outside the church or even inside, claiming to be

Christians, but with the heart and actions like Haman.

g) There is a purifying, similar to a silver anvil or a volcano of fire, with the Lord’s moving.

h) There is a process of building in the Lord, a call to the land; it is waiting to be free, as in

the following:

“The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed.

For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice,

but by the will of the One who subjected it, in hope that the creation

itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the

glorious freedom of the children of God.” Romans 8:19-21

i) The Holy Spirit is convicting our hearts of offenses against the land; the land groans

because it has been raped and depleted. We may not fully understand, but we need to

ask forgiveness for prostituting the gift of worship.

j) We may be too close to understand fully what this new beginning is about; it is not the

“name it & claim it” false doctrine, but rather a decree with a scriptural basis. We are

Declaring God’s truth and are operating out of our destiny in Christ and walking in

authority, not in presumption.

Transition to a worship that is active and honors God and His creation:

The Lord loves the sound of this place, the sound of our worship.

We just want to tell you we love you,

we love the way you love.

In the place where you are, lift up praise. Soprano and baritone, we glorify His Name.

You are worthy of praise, so worthy.

I will love you with all of my heart.

I will love you with all of my soul.

I will love you with all of my strength,

all of my days.

Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord.

You are worthy, worthy.

There is only One Most High.

There is only one Lord Jesus.

Glory to the Righteous One.

People will choose which door; Jesus will separate. He will honor and bless those who choose to follow Him.

We are on our knees in repentance.

Here is my heart; cleanse my heart today.

Outside of you, there is no light.

We surrender, we surrender. (echoes fill the air)

Prophetic Words spoken:

1) As His people come before Him, pure in heart,

His living water will come gushing forth – we’re right there!

2) The Lord brings the fire of the Holy Spirit – protects us from anything that is not of the

Lord, refining our lives.

How we love your fire!

How we love your flame!

Come inside my heart.

Burn in me again.

Burn away all the dross.

Count it all but loss.

Burn it all away. (three times)

Until we see your face.

May we be like snow.

Purify as a goldsmith refines gold.

Pure gold pours down, reflecting Christ, seeking lowly places, as in the following:

“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.” James 4:10

Surrender, servant’s heart.

Give it all to Him, cheerful giver.

You will be my satisfaction, Oh Lord.

Jesus is with me in the garden, not my will – Your will be done.

I glue myself to you – my body, soul, spirit,

That I may be with you,

Move with you.

I seek you first, Lord.

I have a greater thirst for Your Word.

I lay aside everything that would hinder my being with you,

Less of me and more of you,

That is what I say,

Jesus, every day.

I will rest; I will wait; I will abide,

for as long as it takes, for you to produce a fruit in me.

Prophetic words:

1) A white horse with a bit in his mouth, the Lord is pulling him out of danger.

2) God is raising us up to a higher level, to see spiritual things He is seeing.

Communion

A new union with You, Lord.

A common union with you, Lord.

Jesus’ blood washes us as white as snow.

We celebrate this day.

There’s healing in the blood.

We partake in the bread of life.

We abide in you.

Prophetic themes:

1) This place in time, the Holy Spirit flows in tenderness.

2) Farther and farther into the river, in canoes, into the Father.

3) He is making it possible for Him to be our One and Only.

4) It is the love of God that compels us.

5) We are the reflection of Jesus in us.

6) Blessing over the gatekeepers of the land; angels ‘round about us.

Jesus wore a crown of thorns; we have a helmet of salvation.

He is pouring Living Waters on our hearts; we are pure in heart.

Normally we meet the second Sunday of each month, but we are in Seattle at a conference Ray Hughes (you can watch over the net at (http://www.rcftv.net) and then Sunday and Monday evening with Jim Watt, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the 1948 North Battlefield outpouring.

Please remember to pray as I (Darrell) will be partnering with Pastor David Park in several cities in Korea February 15-29)....teaching and ministering on Worship and intimacy.

Many of you know Karen Kolzow. She wrote an absolutely "spot on" word which I've posted on our blot site as well.

This year is the end of the beginning and the beginning of the end.

8 signifies a new beginning; 2008 is a year for separating ourselves for a holy purpose.

We seek Your Presence in every endeavor.

Unless you are with us, Lord, we do not really want to do it.

Humbled by Your Word and Your Majesty,

we seek Your Glory!

“Joshua told the people, ‘Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.’ ”

We followed the prophetic act of Joshua, as he led God’s chosen people around the city of Jericho; in silence they marched 7 times and then at the sound of the trumpet, proclaimed victory in God. We marched in silent prayer, and watched in awe the walls that came down as we shouted our victory in Christ Jesus, or Lord and Savior. (Personal walls the Spirit spoke to my heart were walls of sorrow, of loss and of poverty – all busted in the power of His might.) Victory is ours in Christ, for the taking of territory, just as it was for Joshua and the people of God.

Each one of us carries an anointing of the Lord, for His work in us and through us.

Change / Transition - in our government, the election process.

- in this place

- in families

We acknowledge Your Presence as we experience change.

We receive the wind of the Holy Spirit

And trust in your Power to move from the west, even here in the Northwest

To pave the way and develop the platform for Your purpose.

We are a part of the Remnant and the Army of this region.

We are transitioning to be Watchmen at the River.

Our Lord is providing Restoration of the Land, to the purposes He has ordained.

From the civic governing body to the will of His Spirit, we commend this land to Him.

This place at the River is sacred land; we honor it.

We join in unity of the Holy Spirit, in peace, gentleness, humbleness, and in the truth of Him who is our Creator – to be

The Watchmen at the River.

We hold the authority of God over this place;

we have prayed over its gates and anointed them with oil.

In the realm of spiritual authority, we have renamed this place to be

The Land of My Spirit.

Prophetic Words over this re-dedicated and consecrated Land of My Spirit and the work of God through His people here:

1. “Praise be to the Name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are His. He changes time and seasons; He sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. He reveals deep and hidden things; He knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with Him.” Daniel 2:20-22

8. Whatever our need, God has removed the attacks from Satan and wants to provide generous blessings.

9. God will renew His Spirit in those who are His. Spiritual and physical digestions are similar. The prophetic must be digested. It is refreshing to our spirit.

10. We are a company. God will accompany each of us, releasing funds for all of us.

Just a reminder we are meeting this month on Thursday, Feb. 7th at 7pm at our normal meeting place at the Glenn Otto Park in Troutdale. We are changing ONLY THIS MONTH...and will resume our second Sunday meeting on March 9th.

We are adjusting our schedule because of a series of meetings and events in Seattle (see below)

Carlene and I returned from a week of meetings in Los Angeles with Graham Cooke and Gary Goodell, I spoke at a Korean Church, and spent a wonderful afternoon with our son Matthew during his Sunday liberty day. He is facing a final test of his training this Wednesday....a 15K mountain hike. Thanks for praying for him.

Anniversary of the Later Rain Revival this weekend at St. Luke's.

After Bible School students and faculty sought the Lord for some months, the Holy Spirit poured out in North Battleford, Saskatchewan (Canada) on February 11^th, 1948. This move of the Holy Spirit brought a joy and warmth to worship and restored ancient New Testament practices with new power – The Presbytery, Five-Fold Ministry, etc. This movement's influence is still evident in several streams of the Pentecostal/Charismatic Movements.

Although several aberrations became evident in the Latter Rain early into the outpouring, the positive legacy of this work of the Holy Spirit continues to bless the Church.

St. Luke's will be hosting Jim and Marie Watt for two evenings of sharing –

Sunday February 10^th (7 PM) – followed by a 24-hour Prayer Vigil

Monday February 11^th (7 PM) – the actual anniversary date!

Jim Watt is the last surviving member of the original seven elders from the 1948 summer camp meetings. He and Marie bring a wealth of experience and wisdom in the Holy Spirit.

Each evening will feature worship, led by Darrell and Carlene Dahlman followed by the Watts sharing in an interview format.

60th Celebration

February 11^th, 2008 marks the 60^th Anniversary of the Latter Rain Revival that was sparked in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada. This movement quickly circled the globe and its influence is ongoing in several streams of the Pentecostal/Charismatic Movement.

Dear Friends,

We would like to invite you to 'Worship at the River' this Sunday evening at 6PM. We will be meeting in the Sam Cox building at the Glenn Otto Park located in Troutdale, OR off the Old Columbia Gorge Highway Road just before you cross the Sandy River.

When we first set out to meet at this park to worship Jesus, many people thought because of our name, Worship at the River, that we literally sat outside along the river in lawn chairs to sing our songs of praise to Jesus. Little did we know after hearing Marjorie Baker's testimony, mother of Rolland Baker, her family and many campers attending the camp at our location in 1928 did indeed spend hours singing around campfires along the river's edge to celebrate the new found love they were experiencing in their hearts as the Holy Spirit revealed to each person His heart for them. We won't be outside though you are welcome to bring comfy lawn chairs into the warm building and we will be together seeking the Holy Spirit's guidance to worship our Savior Jesus Christ and our loving Heavenly Father.

I Corinthians 14:26 When we come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. We (the church) will all be strengthened by believers showing respect for one another and for God as we exercise our spiritual gifts.

Ron and Fern were so pleased to have us all (31 Dahlmans + other relatives on Carlene's side) under one roof for 5 days. If you live in Springdale, Corbett or Sandy, those loud bursts of fun in the wee hours of the night were coming from the Fireside Retreat Center. Oops! Soooorrrrreeeeey!

Can't wait to be together again. Sooooo much has happened since the last meeting in all our lives. How was your Christmas and New Year?

Dear Regular Worship at the River Friends,

I believe it is almost unanimous among many in the church... that this year is a year of transition. Even the recent debates and political wranglers are using the word change... constantly. This season of transition has been prophesied by many respected leaders in the kingdom... many have described this year as the end and the beginning of something new. 2008 is definitely a year of new starts. This year will mark the seventh year since Carlene and I transitioned out of the larger church context into something different. I think this year is pivotal and very important for all of us.

I also think our meetings at the River are in transition. We met with our council last night and I want to give you a bit of an advance notice for what is coming up:

1. Worship at the River meetings have been wonderful gatherings of worship with the desire to discover what the Holy Spirit would desire to reveal. There have been times of intimacy, warfare, prophetic revelation, prayer, and building up of the body. This will continue. But during this year, it is our prayer that attendees will understand their own role and destiny in the larger picture of what God is doing in our region. We believe you are gatekeepers in your homes, businesses, your land, and your families. We sense that God is asking us to worship, develop relationships, and be more intentional in equipping these leaders.

2. Hence, our calendar will reflect many opportunities for smaller groups and larger conference type meetings designed for all of us to develop this. There will be smaller meetings in homes, discussion groups... many different expressions. This Sunday at the River, everyone will receive a calendar highlighting these local and informal meeting options. An example of this would be in February, where we will not meet on February 10, the normal second Sunday evening, instead we are planning on:

• February 6, a Wednesday evening at 7pm (place to be confirmed...hopefully at our regular Troutdale building) ..
• in preparation for a larger gathering the following in Seattle

  February 8-10, 2008 and finally, a
• celebration and worship time commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Latter Rain Movement... who's last remaining leader is Jim Watt.... Sunday evening February 10, and Monday evening February 11 , at St Luke's in Seattle.
  

I know it may be difficult for many to come... but we do want to invite you to any or all of these activities.

3. We believe our once a month gatherings will transition into a celebration of what God is doing in your own "Metron"... your sphere of kingdom influence. We will always worship... that is both foundational and fundamental to who we are. But our River meetings will develop and expand into times of equipping, and celebration.

4. I admittedly am sometimes reluctant to talk in detail concerning what Carlene and I are doing, whether it be in the Northwest or overseas. As you know, several times a week I substitute in the public schools. At last count, I have been in 62 schools. Sometimes I wonder what this assignment is all about... but I'm beginning to increasingly recognize that each day I to step into a building with a different principle and administration or a classroom filled with kids, they are opportunities to discern and practice the art of ushering the presence of the Holy Spirit... in essence the kingdom. All of us have that assignment... and you practice that as well. We are strangers in a strange land... transitioning from what has been so familiar into something new. I believe there is a destiny and promised yet to be fulfilled in the Pacific Northwest. This Sunday evening, I'll share a bit of what I see ahead... in terms of connections with like-minded leaders in Seattle, Spokane, Vancouver, and Portland. This has something to do with a destiny of the Pacific Rim countries... which is why we have such a love and interest in Asia.

5. Last July, Bill Peterson attended a meeting of leaders... actually quite small, where Jim Hodges spoke. He is a prophetic and apostolic leader connected with Chuck Pierce and Dutch Sheets. At the end of the gathering, he spoke a prophetic word over the Northwest and Bill shared it with us. I immediately resonated with its import and significance to this region and to us. This Sunday evening, everyone at the River will receive a copy... but I wanted to give you an advance copy. This word is timely and may give us an understanding of our significance of what God wants to do in our Metron.

We bless you, and look forward to seeing you this Sunday evening... we will pray for Larry and Vicki Dietz, who leave for a ministry trip to India on January 15th.

We mark this Friday, July 13, 2007, to say that out of this region there is coming not only a remnant, but also an army. An army shall arise, it shall come, and it shall emerge. It shall step forth and minister the purposes of the Kingdom of God that transcend any and every religious agenda. We thank you for Washington and Oregon and California and New Mexico and Nevada.

We give it to you—these regions—we want to pave the way and build a platform that you could stand on in the coming weeks, months and even the next few years, in the name of the Lord.

Even the weather changes that have come in these days are simply natural indicators of spiritual shifting and spiritual change. Even the winds are blowing—not just El Nino, but the winds of God are blowing. It is a wind from Asia coming to western America. It is not just with Asians who have come to do business, but it is an anointing that they are bringing that they received early on—even from us as the gospel went westward. Now the gospel has encircled the globe and is coming back again. This western area, known for prototypes and movements in our culture shall become known as a place where the move of the Holy Spirit has been released upon the nation, which will sweep eastward.

The Lord is saying get ready for the convergence and the merging of regions and ministries. For the Lord says, I have given the technologies for enhanced communication so that there will be nothing in the darkness. Everything will be brought to the light and exposed, therefore you will shout it from the housetops and you will announce that the Kingdom of God is at hand.

As you announce the Davidic government of the Lord that is coming, the Davidic dancers shall dance. Intercessors shall pray, those that preach shall preach, those who prophesy shall prophecy and you will find each other in your diversity, graphically and even doctrinally. And you will find each other and the Lord will build something that is uniquely His. And no man shall spoil it.

Therefore, you will always be able to test the spirit, to discern the spirit, to distinguish error from truth and the truth from error. And you will walk in the spirit of truth and in the truth of the Word.

For a people here who are hungry, the Lord says I will not be mocked, I will feed them. I will not be mocked, I will pour out upon them. I will not withhold from them. But because their cry has come up before me, the cries that have come up on the basis of my covenant with them, I find your cries irresistible.

Therefore I say, continue the cry. Even as a woman brings forth a man-child she cried out a cry of desperation concerning the birth of the man-child, but then the Lord says the cry changed from desperation to declaration.

Therefore, the Lord says, in this region I am ready to shift now. The desperate cry shall still come, but it will transition into declaration. Therefore you will get ready in these next 18 months to get your declarations defined, to get them published, to get them announced, prayed over and washed in the word. You will find the declarations begin to come to even amaze the atmosphere and the economy and even the governmental structures of this region. For the Lord says, I have spotted this place. It is like Rome of old. I came to a dark, pagan system and brought the light of my gospel, through my Son and it conquered even the Roman world of Europe.

The Lord says, even now, I am coming to this area of darkness, this area of apathy, this area of complacency—this area where the walls are up. Out of this darkness and desperation I am going to bring forth the kingdom of Light. I am going to bring forth my purpose. I am going to bring forth my people. Therefore the seeds you have sown are growing.

You are not to entertain the thought that your God is not answering you. For the Lord is answering you, expanding you, enhancing you, because you were faithful to carry the seed. You will know this in the next 18months, for the very atmosphere is changing and shall increasingly and incrementally change, as you are faithful to pursue the mission I have laid before you.

Therefore rejoice, rejoice, and rejoice, the wine is being released again. But this time, it shall not be wasted. This time it shall not be wasted apostolically or prophetically. It will not be wasted in intercession. It shall be brought into the new wineskin. It shall be able to be carried from place to place. For my church is not in one place. It is like the wineskin on your shoulder where you take it and say “take a drink sir from the wineskin of the Holy Ghost. “ Rejoice even this night that the wine that you have been desiring so greatly is being poured out, says the Lord.

Know that even out of this wine flow will come new ministries and new anointing—and a quickening of those who once walked in anointing and no longer do. The Lord says, I have not forgotten them. These bones can live. I am bringing my wind. I am bringing my wine. Get ready for the release in this area.

Dear Friends,

Just wanted to give you an update with regard to Bill Petersen's surgery this afternoon. I just received a phone call from Delight and the operation to put a stint in his kidney was successful. The doctor will perform another necessary operation in a few months. There will be a biopsy of cells in his bladder and the results will be known in a few days.

Most all of you know that Bill has been experiencing some discomfort and with Delight going through her surgical operation earlier this year... it seems as if the Petersen's are trusting God for renewed health. They received a prophetic word some time ago that they would be a couple entering into a new phase of ministry just as if they were 40 years old. I believe that. But I know they will need intercessory prayer support over the next few days and months. I'd like to encourage you to make a commitment to pray with the Holy Spirit's wisdom and revelation for Bill and Delight... and let's all agree for complete healing and no more unnecessary surgery!

I like the scripture from Isaiah 58. Let's pray this crafted prayer with a unified voice.

Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.

Lord we acknowledge that you have your hand on this couple. They have invested much in the body of Christ. Lord we agree that you are the Healer and the great Physician and a new season of light and life will break forth this next year for Bill and Delight. This light will break forth just as the beginning of a new day or a new year. And Lord we thank you that your healing will appear quickly for Bill, and your promise of protection and grace will precede their steps and be their rear guard. We thank you for the promise of your redemption for the Petersen's.

Many many times the Petersen's have extended hospitality and love to many who have needed it. This would be a great time to e-mail or drop them a line and tell them that we love them and we stand with them for healing.

Every second Sunday evening Worship at the River gatherings during December have been memorable and wonderful celebrations of God's goodness throughout the year. This year is no exception. We look forward to this Sunday December 10 at 6 pm as we meet to celebrate Christmas.

Keeping with our long standing tradition (like, uh...this really the second time we've done this), Carlene and I again present our Top Ten Memorable Influences of 2007. Last year, I included mostly books and stuff, but this year, we felt as if we should include "slices of life", moments which shaped our life this year. Some may be encouraging, entertaining...or maybe even enlightening. Soooo, starting "Dave Letterman style".... our Top Ten!

10. Pacific Northwest December Storm

Last weekend Carlene and I were in the Cascade mountains near Leavenworth Washington (best know for it's Annual Christmas Festival) This is my Honda the Monday morning we as we were preparing to leave. We had a great time being snowed in!

9. Jean Darnall, Jim and Marie Watt and Marge Baker

It has been our honor to develop a rich friendship with these three...all four turn 84 years young this year. Jim and Marie Watt,were instrumental leaders in the Holy Spirit's move in 1948 in North Battleford, Canada. Jean has been a leader in England, Asia, South America, and pastored Angelus Temple and has been a mentor for us. Finally, Marjorie Baker, Rolland Baker's mother, who recently moved to Carlene's hometown, Port Townsend, Washington, with her husband, were key leaders in China, carrying on the legacy of H.A. Baker. All ARE forerunners...and we feel priveleged to know them.

When Marjorie began to share with us her family's history, she told of her family returning from China to the Portland area in the late 1920's. She described their hunger for God, and their exposure to the work of the Holy Spirit through John G. Lake and others who had experienced the power of God. They experienced a wonderful renewal and refreshing in the Holy Spirit. Before they could find housing in Portland, they stayed at a Christian camp, located near the Sandy River. Marjorie distinctly remembers some of the young people climbing a high bluff and singing back and forth with another group of children at the camp on the other side of the River.

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007, Carlene drove Marjorie and her sister Beth, 83 and 89 respectively, back to the building the city of Troutdale purchased from a Christian camp many years ago….where some 70 years earlier they sang…the very same humble tabernacle where we gather monthly to worship the One Who is the same, yesterday, today, and forever. No wonder the land itself reverberates with praise!

How did the number of Christians in the world grow from as few as 25,000 one hundred years after Christ’s death to up to 20 million in AD 310?

How did the Chinese underground church grow from 2 million to over 100 million in sixty years despite considerable opposition? In The Forgotten Ways, Alan Hirsch reveals the paradigmatic insights he discovered as he delved into those questions. He then translates these findings into the context of the contemporary Western church.

I love this quote from the book: "If you want to build a ship, don't summon people to buy wood, prepare tools, distribute jobs, and organize the work....rather teach people the yearning for a wide, boundless ocean."

3. Angels That Gather (Paul Keith Davis)

In December of 2000, Carlene and I attended a conference where Paul Keith spoke, and he prayed for us and gave us an encouraging word from Psalm 67 which has become a sort of inheiritance word for our ministry.

God's Word emphasizes great spiritual activity in the latter-days. Jesus Himself said, "The end-of-the-age is the harvest," and promised to send an angelic host to co-labor with us in the mandate to see Him receive the full measure of His reward. There will be a harvest of promises, commissions, mantles, and a harvest of souls. This book provides a prophetic outline to help access this inheritance.

When the imagination of a writer and the passion of a theologian cross-fertilize the result is a novel on the order of The Shack. This book has the potential to do for our generation what John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress did for his. It’s that good!

Francis Frangipane:

"Declare War on Ungratefulness and Grumbling WITH a Heart of THANKFULNESS"

"The thankful heart sees the best part of every situation."

From my earliest Christian years I've heard questions about Jesus' comment concerning Judas Iscariot: "Did I Myself not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil?" (John 6:70)

What did Jesus mean? Was Judas genetically a devil and not a man? (Jesus didn't say Judas had a devil, He said he was a devil). Can a devil actually live among people as a human? While I am no scholar in ancient Greek, I think truth is better served reading the literal translation of this verse. The word translated as "devil," diabolos, is the same word translated elsewhere in the New Testament as "slanderer" or "malicious gossip" (see 1 Timothy 3:11; 2 Timothy 3:3).

When Jesus says that Judas is a devil, He is saying one of you is a "false accuser," a "slanderer," a "malicious gossip." Judas could not keep his negative perspective to himself.

Remember, just before Judas delivered Jesus to the Pharisees, he was offended that Jesus allowed an expensive ointment to be lavished on His hair. Judas indignantly complained: "Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii, and given to poor people?" (John 12:5). His words spread strife among the other apostles as well (Matthew 26:8). Judas said, in effect, "Who permitted this thoughtless luxury?" Well, it was Jesus. The woman had anointed Him for His burial. Yet, to Judas this was an extravagance that Jesus shouldn't have taken. In the angry mind of Judas Iscariot, here was justification to go to the chief priests. He had grounds to break ranks with Christ (Matthew 26:14-15).

God Has a Problem With Grumblers

Betrayal is never a sudden thing; rather, it is an accumulative response to the unresolved anger and disappointment one feels toward another. The offenses we do not transfer to God in surrendered prayer inevitably decay and become a venom we transfer to others through gossip. In the process, we embrace slander, but we feel justified. We become malicious gossips, but in our minds we're only communicating a "truth," a character flaw, that we self-righteously "discerned."

To understand Judas' betrayal of Christ, we must unearth its source: Judas Iscariot was a grumbler. When we lose sight of the many things for which we should be thankful, we become murmurers and complainers, increasingly darkened by a thought-life engendered by hell.

Beware when your anger toward another Christian has led you to gossip about him or her, especially if you are embittered and are now sowing criticisms about him to others. Yes, beware: you are no longer being conformed to Christ, but are actually becoming more like Judas than Jesus.

Grumblers Everywhere

Of course, this grumbling attitude was not isolated to Judas' betrayal of Jesus. Many would-be disciples and Jewish leaders were also infected with murmuring. Consider: there were miracles everywhere, Christ had just fed the 5,000 when a very large crowd of His disciples began to find fault. Yet, even though Jesus warned, "Do not grumble among yourselves" (John 6:43), still the crowd persisted. Remember, these were Christ's disciples, and they were not grumbling at a sinner, but the only sinless man who ever lived.

"But Jesus, conscious that His disciples grumbled at this," asked, 'Does this cause you to stumble?'" (John 6:61). And then, the grumbling spirit continued until "...many of His disciples withdrew, and were not walking with Him anymore" (John 6:66).

Grumbling caused people to stop seeing and appreciating miracles. It caused disciples to be offended by Jesus' teaching and they stopped walking with Him.

As it was then, so it is today. Grumbling will ultimately cause you to stop walking with Jesus. It is a killer. You see, incredibly, not just the Pharisees and Judas Iscariot found fault with Jesus, even His disciples grumbled at times. Heaven was manifest in their midst and all they were focused on was what they perceived was wrong. That's what a grumbling attitude can do.

This poison of ingratitude is prevalent in the Church today. Paul warned that, "...in the last days...men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips" ( see 2 Timothy 3:1-9). You get the point: "men will be...malicious gossips" or devils. They will be given to destroying one another with their words.

The Thankful Heart

Personally, I've declared war on grumbling. An unthankful heart is an enemy to God's will. Can you join me with this? Can you crucify a murmuring spirit? We have received too much from God to allow ourselves opportunities for ingratitude and unbelief! We have received too many gifts and privileges to allow grumbling to disqualify us of our destiny.

The thankful heart sees the best part of every situation. It sees problems and weaknesses as opportunities and struggles as refining tools. My prayer is for each of us to possess the abundant life that Jesus came to give us. I want to drive that little, ugly, grumbling demon away from our hearts, and replace it with a living awareness of the goodness of God!

Paul warned,"Nor let us...grumble, as (Israel) did, and were destroyed by the destroyer" (1 Corinthians 10:9-10). The moment we open ourselves to grumbling, we simultaneously open up to destruction.

"Whatever is true, whatever is honorable...is right, whatever is pure...lovely...of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things" (Philippians 4:8). Remember, Paul was writing to people in the ancient Roman world. It was full of evil, full of injustice, full of reasons to grumble and be upset; but instead, God calls His people to a higher realm, where we dwell on the things that are above.

You say, "Who then will point out all the things that are wrong with life?"

Oh, there are plenty of volunteers for that task. Better to ask, "How can I attain the blessed life Jesus came to give me?"

You say, "But the world is wicked. We need to decry and defeat evil." Yes, and I totally agree, I often decry evil myself. But I must live and offer a better life if I am going to defeat evil. God doesn't want His people to be grumbling about the difficult conditions of existence. He wants us to be mercy-motivated, redemption-orientated, prayer-empowered ambassadors of Heaven.

If we are merely complaining about what's wrong with the people around us, we should beware: we may actually be more like followers of Judas rather than Jesus.

We bless you, and thank you for praying for during the latest Korean adventure. I am convinced life is filled with "snapshot moments"; the brief and seemingly insignificant encounters which we often miss. I am talking about the fleeting but powerful moments where we recognize the Holy Spirit has "setups" orchestrated for a divine purpose. I experienced one of these encounters October 23rd, as I arrived in Seoul Korea after a 17 hour flight and was met by my friend Pastor David Park. With him was Nepali Pastor Hanok, (shown with Pastor David and Mrs. Park) who had felt the leading of the Holy Spirit to attend a conference in Seoul.

I was to spend just a few hours with this brother, but soon recognized God's hand in this divine connection. Even though he has planted some 600 churches over the past years and spent a year in prison, he was hungry to network with other Kingdom minded believers. In his words:

"It was indeed a great joy of meeting you in Korea. As we shared, it was indeed a divinely appointed time for us to meet each other. I believe the Lord has taken me there with a very specific plan to be CONNECTED with the wider community of Apostolic and Prophetic ministry team. It was my first meeting with such a community. I need wider prayer support...desperately now as I am making some crucial major decisions in regards to future Apostolic Ministry in Nepal."

Please pray for Pastor Hanok, who just over a month ago tragically lost his only 24 year old son. He needs our prayer support. I felt impressed by the Holy Spirit this entire trip was worth undertaking because of these few hours spent with Hanok. Any of you may email him with words of encouragement at: sbt@mail.com.np

This Sunday evening November 11 at 6 p.m., we will once again gather for Worship at the River. These meetings are deliberately orchestrated to allow the Holy Spirit complete freedom. We are intentional in our desire to create an atmosphere where the presence of the Lord and his ministry to us is paramount. Occasionally, there have been moments where we simply wait on the Lord. We rest in Him. This is both discipline and practice. Carol Arnett, from the Toronto Airport Christian Fellowship describes this as soaking. In her words:

"During previous revivals people referred to it as "waiting on the Lord" or "tarrying" as they lingered expecting God's revival blessings. Although "soaking" includes waiting on the Lord, in this present move of the Spirit it means much more than that. To "soak" in God's presence is to rest in His love rather than to "strive" in prayer....often the Holy Spirit hovers over the person to reveal more of God's love and to renew and repair areas of a person's life. As the believer soaks in God's presence, the Lord takes control and begins to draw his attention to God's word..."

This is neither mystical, extra biblical, or out of the ordinary. We can all agree the Lord is our shepherd... we shall not want. But I often miss this next part: He makes me to lie down... (ouch)
This Sunday we want to allow the Holy Spirit to teach us more about this. We want to learn to rest... and let the Lord bring revelation, healing, and encouragement.
